2020 Annual Report
Episcopal Charities
Transforming lives of those in need
| OUR WORK
We fight hunger
through our self-run, Bulk Buy program and by providing wraparound services to food pantries and community kitchens.
We create youth opportunities
for the next generation through children's arts, academic enrichment and summer recreation programs.
We strengthen communities
through skills-building programs that offer a path to success for unemployed workers, recent immigrants and the formerly incarcerated re-entering society.
We protect the most vulnerable
through health and wellness programs that improve quality of life for senior citizens, the homebound, and people with substance-use disorder.
In the true spirit of outreach, every program is free of religious content, welcoming one and all.
Bishop &
President's Letter
The ongoing pandemic changed all of our lives in 2020. Episcopal Charities was transformed too. Unforeseen pressures impacted the outreach programs in our portfolio and our response to those challenges.
With creativity, perseverance, and dedication, our staff came together to ensure our programs were available to the most vulnerable across our large and diverse Diocese when they needed help the most. The Episcopal Charities’ staff helped programs stay in operation while maintaining safety protocols.
As nonessential businesses closed and unemployment swelled to record levels, the need for support multiplied. From creating grab-and-go operations at food pantries and community kitchens to transitioning in-person after school education and arts programming to the virtual environment, our team took early action to keep programs running during this critical time.
We relied heavily on Zoom to connect with staff and to host programs. Maintaining these open lines of communication allowed us to stay abreast of the shifting challenges throughout the pandemic.
Supply shortages provided a big challenge for our food programs. Programs reported difficulty in sourcing essential items because of soaring prices and lack of inventory. In response to this need, our Program Office developed the Bulk Buy Program, an initiative to aggregate demand among our food programs to negotiate discounted rates.
Combining the food needs of multiple pantries throughout the diocese allowed us to decrease food costs, secure guaranteed availability, and reduce delivery charges for pantries who enrolled in this initiative with a food wholesaler. Through this cost-effective approach, we were able to honorably steward the donations we received from loyal constituents.
On behalf of our staff and Board of Directors, our hearts are filled with gratitude for your unwavering support in 2020. Your generosity allowed Episcopal Charities to support individuals and families during this tumultuous time. I am proud to say that, in this period of expanding need, Episcopal Charities awarded significantly more grants than ever before in our history. Our work would not be possible without your continued support.
Thank you,

The Rt. Rev. Andrew ML Dietsche
Bishop of New York

Peter W. Keller
President, Board of Directors
Covid Relief
Like so many organizations around New York pivoting during the outbreak of COVID-19 in March 2020, Episcopal Charities held its first board meeting via Zoom. Those early days of the pandemic were filled with many unknowns. The week before the meeting, our staff had been told to begin working remotely. Our program partners started to tell us that something “big,” was happening.
At the meeting, a new committee was formed, funded, and empowered to manage the Episcopal Charities’ response to the pandemic. Not yet knowing the need, the board seeded the committee with $50,000 to support that needed help. Because of the generosity of many, the initial seed of $50,000 grew to become a fund of over $500,000 in 2020.
The staff of Episcopal Charities created and posted a new funding application on the website that allowed any of our programs to apply for assistance. The process was streamlined to meet needs as they came in. A program could apply for funds by Thursday, the committee could approve the funding on Friday, and money would be transferred early the following week. In total, Episcopal Charities awarded 47 COVID-19 emergency grants to 35 parishes across the diocese totaling $435,473.15.
The COVID-19 Committee ended up meeting almost weekly throughout the year. The committee reviewed applications and determined the best ways to support our program leaders. Board President Peter Keller said he felt it was imperative to quickly approve program funding to help those struggling with food insecurity.

Covid-19 Volunteers
Episcopal Charities’ Volunteer Program was a critical form of program support during the COVID - 19 pandemic. With the help of Episcopal Charities’ network of volunteers, food pantries and after-school programs that may have otherwise had to shut down were able to stay open. Episcopal Charities recruited and trained volunteers who managed COVID-safe operations when they were needed most.
More than 200 volunteers joined our network in 2020. Collectively, they donated 2,300 hours of service to 18 in-person and virtual programs, which is the equivalent of over $65,000 worth of services for outreach programs in the Diocese of New York.
Join the more than 200 volunteers that joined our network in 2020 by visiting our Volunteer Hub page. If you have any questions email us at ecvolunteers@dioceseny.org

Bulk Buy Program
2020 found many of us going into grocery stores only to discover items out of stock or skyrocketed prices. The 60+ Episcopal Charities, supported programs to increase food access (food pantries, soup kitchens, after-school programs) experienced the same issues while managing a significant surge in need with fewer volunteers, less donations, and a more diverse client base. On more than a few occasions this past year, we would get word that a food pantry's shelves were literally bare.
Most programs we support relied on an overwhelmed food bank/emergency food network that couldn’t consistently be relied upon for the community's healthy/culturally relevant foods. We began hearing stories about volunteers trying to fill in the gaps by buying out products like shelf-stable milk from multiple stores. This exacerbated dwindling budgets and took food out of the community.
To support our programs and help get food into the community, our COVID-19 Fund awarded expedited cash grants to programs. As we worked with our partners, we discovered that the awarded money couldn’t guarantee the actual sourcing of what was needed, and because of higher prices, the money wasn’t going as far as hoped. This was the context that led us to develop Bulk Buy.
Because most of our programs are community-based, they cannot leverage huge budgets to negotiate lower prices and favorable delivery terms with a national wholesaler. Bulk Buy essentially aggregates the needs represented by all our food access programs, negotiates with the wholesaler for better terms, then awards “food grants” to the food access program. Program staff or volunteers place their orders directly with the wholesaler up to the awarded amount, and the bills are sent to and taken care of by Episcopal Charities.
In October, thanks to the support of our donors and the generosity of the Mother Cabrini Health and Harriet Nichol Foundations, we piloted the Bulk Buy program. We awarded over $75,000 in total food grants in those three months. Program leaders could order fresh proteins, produce, and culturally relevant foods they struggled to source and pay for before Bulk Buy. In December, 5 tons (10,000 lbs) of beef, lamb, salmon, and chicken were purchased and distributed to these programs so families could celebrate the holidays with a special meal.
The five programs selected for the pilot served a combined total average of over 12,000 duplicated individuals each month. By providing these essential food grants and access to our contracted wholesaler, program leaders shared the joy they experienced providing a specific kind of flour used by the Guatemalan community, that they hadn’t been able to source before or a client's delight at having name-brand peanut butter for once. So often, those struggling with food insecurity are made to feel that they should be grateful to have anything. Bulk Buy allows our programs to reflect the diversity and dignity of every person that comes through

2020 Grants Paid
In 2020, Episcopal Charities awarded $893,925.00 in grants to our traditional programs. Financial support from our donors goes directly to these critical programs operating on the front lines of our New York communities. All operating costs are funded by EC’s board of directors.
EC has a unique model of screening and recommending grantees through its local, community-based, volunteer-led Advisory Committee, which visits all partners on-site to learn about programmatic and operational support needs. To find out more email programoffice@dioceseny.org.

2020 Virtual Tribute Dinner
Responding to the Call
On Thursday, November 19th instead of gathering at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine hundreds of the Episcopal Charities community gathered virtually for our annual Tribute Dinner. Lauren Jenkins Chung and Doug Schimel, our evening co-chairs, pulled together an incredible night that helped tell the story of EC in 2020 and how their response to COVID-19. That night alone helped raise nearly $620,000 to help EC continue to respond to the call.
Those that participated were treated to special music by a combined virtual youth choir from Young at Art’s, Nessin Cultural Art’s Center, and the Washington Heights Choir School, who represented some of our fantastic youth programs. The night highlighted the work of St. Thomas Amenia (Dutchess County) and St. Ann’s Morrisania (Bronx) who exemplified how so many of our supported programs pivoted during the pandemic to serve their communities.
