Our Mission

Transforming the lives of those in need.

Our Work

  • We fight hunger through food pantries and community kitchens.

  • We strengthen communities through skills-building programs that offer a path to success for the unemployed, recent immigrants and the formerly incarcerated re-entering society.

  • We protect the most vulnerable through health and wellness programs that improve quality of life for senior citizens, the homebound, and people with substance-use disorder.

  • We create opportunities for the next generation through children's arts, academic enrichment and summer recreation programs.

In the true spirit of outreach,

every program is free of religious content,

welcoming one and all.

Our Mission

Bishop & President's Letter

We write in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 crisis. The work of our programs has never been more important, and we are incredibly proud of our staff and all our programs as they respond with imagination and passion to the increasing needs across our Diocese. The COVID crisis, like so many crises, falls disproportionately on hourly workers and those for whom food insecurity is an issue even in “normal” times.

Our outreach work continues across the ten counties of the Episcopal Diocese of New York thanks to the generous support of individuals, congregations, corporations and foundations. We appreciate the confidence that you have placed in us and pledge to remain good stewards of the funds entrusted to us.

Episcopal Charities supports diverse outreach programs: children’s academic enrichment, children’s arts, community kitchens, food pantries, health and wellness, skills building and summer recreation. In 2019, grants were provided to 101 programs serving more than one million people, particularly those living below the poverty line, the working poor and the undocumented.

As an invested partner with the programs we support, Episcopal Charities has a keen understanding of the socioeconomic challenges across the area. We make annual visits to every program, giving us a unique vantage point to witness the impact programs have on the individuals and communities they serve and help us to offer assistance as programs face new issues.

Episcopal Charities utilizes three assets to achieve its mission. The first is the critical funding to support outreach. The second is the educational programs delivered by our Sustainability Institute. These free workshops allow programs to develop greater capacity to deliver on their mission to ensure their longevity. The third is the human capital we supply through our network of volunteers. We recruit and train volunteers to provide extra hands to deliver services as well as meeting requests for specialized assistance with skilled volunteers in our Consultant Corps. This balanced approach provides the requisite combination of tools to help our programs continue to prosper and to strengthen their communities.

This annual report provides a window into the world of our programs and the amazing work they do in transforming lives across the diocese every day. We only are able to do this life-changing work because of your support. Thank you for making this possible. By helping to respect the dignity of every human being, we can make this world a better place for all of our neighbors.

With gratitude,

On Tuesday, November 12th Episcopal Charities held its annual Tribute Dinner at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in Manhattan and welcomed 570 guests. The dinner raised nearly $1.2 million to help support 101 vital outreach programs throughout the Diocese of New York.

Episcopal Charities was pleased to honor the Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry and James A. Baker, III, & Susan G. Baker. Both Presiding Bishop Curry and Secretary Baker offered inspirational remarks.

Eldredge Blalock, a recent graduate of Hudson Link for Higher Education, who now serves as the Development Manager at Hudson Link, spoke about this program and how his earning two degrees while incarcerated transformed his life and that of his family.

Our thanks go out to Dinner Chairs Mathew Ailey and Andrew Horrocks, Master of Ceremonies Campbell Wharton, our honorees and to all those who so generously supported the event.
