OUR MISSION
Transforming lives of those in need
OUR WORK
We fight food insecurity
through EC operated Bulk Buy and Farm to Pantry programs and by providing wraparound services to food pantries and community kitchens.
We create youth opportunities
for the next generation through children's arts, academic enrichment and summer recreation programs.
We strengthen communities
through skills-building programs that offer a path to success for unemployed workers, recent immigrants and the formerly incarcerated re-entering society.
We protect the most vulnerable
through health and wellness programs that improve quality of life for senior citizens, the homebound, and people with substance-use disorder.
In the true spirit of outreach, every program is free of religious content, welcoming one and all.
Leadership Letter
Dear Friends,
Grace and peace be with you.
I am humbled and grateful to present Episcopal Charities of the Diocese of New York's 2022 Annual Report. This past year has been a testament to the power of faith in action. Through our collective efforts, fueled by love and compassion, we have touched many lives and brought hope to those in need.
As we reflect on the past year, we are reminded of the transformative impact that comes from living out our shared mission. It is through our collective commitment that we find strength to serve, to heal, and to advocate for the marginalized and vulnerable.
Our work has been made possible by the dedication and generosity of our supporters, volunteers, and partners. Together, we have turned compassion into action, transforming lives and creating lasting change for those we serve.
In the year ahead, let us continue to be guided by our faith, united in our common purpose, and motivated by our love for our neighbors. When we work together, we have an incredible opportunity to build a more just and compassionate world, and I am eagerly looking forward to actively participating in this transformative work alongside all of you.
May God's blessings be on us as we continue on this journey together.
In faith,
Kevin W. VanHook, II
Executive Director
Episcopal Charities of New York
EC’s Transformative Impact in 2022
Total Grants Awarded in 2022: $1,200,000
As a community of outreach programs, Episcopal Charities is distinguished by the deep connections each of the 190 parishes within our network has to the respective communities they serve throughout the ten counties that make up the Episcopal Diocese of New York.
Beginning in 2021 we began developing and operating our own innovative programs that respond to need in real time – primary examples of which are Bulk Buy and Farm to Pantry.
Because our supported programs are located both in the City and scattered throughout the Hudson Valley, we are given a unique perspective and have access to real-time data from organizations and people with lived experiences “on the ground” in each individual community.
Our food access programs, Bulk Buy and Farm to Pantry, were incubated in 2021 and expanded in 2022 to help our food access program partners have reliable and convenient sources of healthy, culturally appropriate foods that meet their particular communities’ needs. Both programs bridge gaps in existing food systems and provide long term solutions for insuring a there is a consistent infusion of healthy foods into local communities which impact health outcomes, provide dignity in choice, and increase likelihood of consumption through cultural familiarity.
Youth Opportunity Grants
Total awarded: $315,455.00
Youth Opportunity Grants are awarded, with consultation from our Advisory Committee to parish-based outreach programs addressing the needs of children and youth in communities throughout the diocese by providing English as a Second Language tutoring, academic enrichment, instruction in the arts, and safe spaces for youth to grow and develop. With a growing mental health crisis among youth and teen populations, some of the most vulnerable among us are our youth. These programs act as a stabilizing presence and fulfill an important component of the social safety net.

Basic Human Needs Grants
Total awarded: $656,600.00
Basic Human Needs grants support parish-based human services programs, with consultation from our Advisory Committee, that provide services to families teetering on the poverty line, the elderly, those living in poverty, and to specific vulnerable populations. These include the homeless, newly arriving immigrants, people impacted by the criminal justice system, and individuals living with chronic illnesses. As many of our programs have transitioned into providing food access to combat the rising food insecurity, including home delivery of meals, we have funded many new and critical food access programs.
Food Access Programs
Total awarded: $517,600.00
Food access programs are all of our food assistance program and include but are not limited to food pantries, soup kitchens, mobile pantries, and grab-and-go programs.

Bulk Buy Grants
Total awarded: $249,905.93
Number of individuals served: 5,000; Number of meals supplemented: 45,000
The Bulk Buy program aggregates demand among feeding programs to negotiate discounted rates from a local commercial wholesaler. Many of our programs are community-based so they cannot leverage huge budgets to negotiate lower prices and favorable delivery terms with a wholesaler. Bulk Buy provides programs with purchasing credits that allow them to work directly with wholesalers to purchase food and supplies, while Episcopal Charities handles the billing and helps ensure timely and convenient delivery to partners. Through this initiative, feeding programs can supply culturally relevant foods as well as expensive foods (like proteins) that are typically expensive to buy or difficult to acquire.

Farm to Pantry
Total awarded: $125,000.00
Number of individuals served: 2,200; Number of meals supplemented: 20,000
Farm to Pantry allows programs to work directly with local farmers to obtain fresh produce and proteins that can be custom grown to meet the needs of the specific cultures each program and community serves. Episcopal Charities contracts and pays the farmers up-front ahead of the growing season, both the farmers benefit by having consistent income, and the programs benefit by not having to pay for pricier fresh foods in real-time. Through this initiative, feeding programs can supply culturally relevant foods as well as expensive foods (like proteins, herbs, and fresh produce) that are typically expensive to buy or difficult to acquire.

Covid-19 Fund
Total awarded: $16,000.00
In 2022, the COVID-19 Committee, created in 2020 by the Board to directly deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, continued to meet and approve grants. These grants were created to help all our programs deal with COVID-related expenses. We define "COVID-19 related expenses" as any loss due to the pandemic, as well as any increased demand for services that may be attributed to the effects of the pandemic (including, but not limited to - extra food costs, costs for supplies to be given away, staffing expenses, etc.).

Ways to Help
You can help others by partnering with Episcopal Charities in any of the following ways:
VOLUNTEER
VOLUNTEER: Check out our volunteer calendar for opportunities at a variety of program sites - read to a child or help serve a meal, email ecvolunteers@dioceseny.org.
CONSULTANT CORPS: Do you have specialized skills? Join our Consultant Corps and put your skills to work for programs in need of customized services.
GROUP VOLUNTEERING: Arrange for a corporate or church group to volunteer at one of our program sites, email ecvolunteers@dioceseny.org.
The Volunteer Program has 4 Pillars:
-
To recruit and place individual group volunteers in outreach programs.
-
To recruit members of the Consultant Corps program, which places volunteers with specialized skills in community outreach programs. Consultant Corps members support programs with videography, fundraising and grant writing, strategic planning, language justice, urban agriculture, and more.
-
To offer social justice and contextual education, and reflection activities for volunteers throughout the Diocese.
-
To support and create resources for volunteer management infrastructure at outreach programs across the Diocese.
GIVE
DONATE: Every gift helps, regardless of its size, and will be put to good use.
CORPORATE MATCH: Give through your employer. Many companies support Episcopal Charities through matching-gift programs, event attendance, and employee-recommended grants. Inquire if your company provides these benefits, and email lchung@dioceseny.org with questions.
GIVE FROM YOUR IRA: If you are 70.5 years old or older and have a traditional IRA, you’re eligible to make a gift to Episcopal Charities directly from your IRA — tax-free. Contact us for more information.
INCLUDE EPISCOPAL CHARITIES IN YOUR WILL: You can help transform the lives of those in need for years to come by naming Episcopal Charities as a beneficiary of your estate.
